Up the Protein and Fat
Jean I. Heidker, who holds a PhD in animal nutrition and feed processing, states âProtein provides both energy and a source of amino acids to keep the dogâs body and muscles in optimum working condition. Exercise increases the K9 Services Dogâs requirement for protein, as this exercise will place an additional demand on the dogâs body. Any injury or disruption of muscle tissue will need to be repaired and additional protein will be required for this. The source of protein is very importantâto achieve the greatest benefit from the protein ingested it must have the proper amino acid balance. High-quality animal protein in the form of eggs or meat provides the best amino acid balance and the highest digestibility.â48
Protein not only provides energy and increases performance, it is important for preventing injuries too. In a recent study, dogs undergoing rigorous training were given different amounts of protein. The dogs fed a lower-protein diet sustained many more injuries and in some cases, had to stop training. The dogs on a high-protein diet, on the other hand, trained without problems or injuries. The study found that if all of the available protein is used for energy, as in the case of the dogs on low-protein diets, the body is robbed of the protein needed to perform its other important functions like repairing tissue and producing hormones. For working dogs, whose tissues are constantly being repaired, a high level of protein is crucial. Protein has also been found to reduce the risk of training anemia.
Fats, not carbohydrates, are the working dogâs best source of energy. Dogs find fats delicious and highly digestible and unlike carbohydrates, they help keep energy levels stable. Additionally, there is no better source of the calories your working dog relies on than fats.
